10 | Things to know about
Johannes Boekhoudt
1 | Boekhoudt delayed start
Boekhoudt was born into a typical middle-class family. His father was a businessman, and his mother was a secretary for the government of the island of Bonaire. He appeared as a professional artist in the New York Art Scene in 2005 by exhibiting with various Latin American artists at the Venezuelan Consulate in New York City.
2 | Recognition
In the New York City art scene, his work promptly received acclaim for his unique brushstrokes in the form of crosses, which advanced his artistic language towards expressionism. Boekhoudt's works hugely impressed art Collectors during his exhibitions in New York City and Latin America. In 2006, His first Solo Museum exhibition at the Museo Calderón Guardia in San José, Costa Rica impressed the critics and enhanced his vision as an expressionist artist.
In 2022, Oaxaca, Mexico honored Boekhoudt with a distinguished recognition named the Galardón de Oro Hermano Migrante Binacional for his achievements regarding Social Injustice and Human Rights.
3 | Boekhoudt and the People
If nothing else, Boekhoudt creates his works with one purpose - to relate to the people directly. His message is to expose the struggle with corruption and the failure of civil rights within our common societies. Ultimately, this purpose is to inspire awareness and change. His Metropolis Series from 2009 exemplifies his commitment to the idea to empower the younger generation to make a change. He captures the daily rushed scene in New York City with bright colors and shapes that depict the impact of the growing Metrópolis on us rather than our impact on changing its encroachment. His freestyle of paintings allows him to create an unlimited concept of chaos which provokes us to question the consequence of our current society.
4 | Academic Disregard
Johannes has created an unencumbered view of expression and communication by bypassing the academic influences in the art world. He defined his unique style of expression as “Crucillism Abstract”, which he describes as his most effective way to express his thoughts.
5 | Influences
His inspiration is motivated by several Masters including Jean Michel Basquiat, Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, and others who have also elevated their unlimited imaginations into their perceptions and artworks. By visiting the Museum of Modern Art in New York City as much as he can, he interacts and dialogues with Masterpieces that impact him the most.
6 | Techniques
Johannes utilizes various materials for his artworks based on the need of the idea itself. Ranging from sketches, collages, drawings, and painting on multiple two-dimensional materials, his necessity for creation and expression dictates the form of the artwork. Although he has applied various styles and techniques in different stages of his career, his "Crucillism Abstract" is predominant.
Although it is not as well known, he also produces sculptures to express his three-dimensional perspective. He calls these works his "Construction Elements”, which arise from a prerequisite design sketch and materialize with different wood and other tangible elements forming a sculpture that impacts from multiple angles.
7 | Urban life Impact
New York City has always been the inspiration for his intentions. As he declared to the press, "In the Metropolis, we all live like ants following a complex structure as a human being's secret life." – Boekhoudt.
In 2007, he created the "Los Monstruos del Quijote", a stunning series of paintings represented by fantasy and windmills, based on the literature of Miguel de Cervantes. The narrative of this series is the confrontation with our internal demons. As you observe this series, it resembles a completed puzzle—made solely from crosses in brushstrokes.
8 | Impact in America
As part of his commitment to communicating social injustice, Johannes has supported various foundations dedicated to the same purpose in Latin America and Africa, thereby developing a reputation for Boekhoudt on a global scale. In addition, he regularly exhibits in art museums, so his message is available to everyone, and he donates a vital art piece to the museum's collection for them to keep and continue his message.
9 | His Color Scheme
He purposefully combines hues and layers with his broad palette of colors to create movement and emotions in the image. These multiple colors complete the principal idea of the work. As such, white and black are the last colors that he applies to the canvas to emphasize specific lines and zones of the drawing. These two colors enhance the complex sketch that holds the idea in place and completes the work.
10 | Future Endeavors
Boekhoudt's dedication to producing Fine Art with a strong message makes him an ideal artist to collect. His works are categorized as Fine Art, having been curated and exhibited in several museums, which allows you, as a collector, to diversify your portfolio of investment with artwork that retains its value. Boekhoudt constantly works with new ideas for the betterment of all as a reflection of changes in our society. His mission is to continue exhibiting in art museums worldwide as his determined philosophy to share his work with the public.
